Jet Airways, India’s largest carrier in terms of passenger volume, has found a unique way to resolve congestion at some of the major airports in the country.

The airline is looking at operating wide body airplanes in some of the congested domestic routes from the summer schedule. “From the summer schedule, we will be operating wide bodied Airbus A330s in a few of our flights to and from Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai as the congestion at airports limit the number of flights we can operate,” said a senior Jet Executive, requesting anonymity.

The airline operates single-aisle Boeing 737s or Airbus A320s with around 160 seats per aircraft for domestic routes. The wide-bodied aircraft will provide around 230 seats per aircraft, allowing the airline to have more capacity with less number of flights.

“Initially, we plan to take around two A330s either on lease or on sale and operate around 20 flights,” the executive said. The Naresh Goyal-owned Jet Airways operates over 400 flights daily to 67 destinations worldwide.

Infrastructure constraints due to upgrade work at Mumbai and Chennai airports have drastically brought down the capacity of these airports and has forced airlines to drastically cut down the number of flights. Mumbai airport has been the worst hit with the main runway closed for eight hours every day from Monday to Saturday. With domestic travel growing in double digits post-slowdown, airlines wanted 573 daily slots from the airport, but has managed only 490.

In mid-November, the Delhi-Mumbai sector saw a 200-300 per cent jump in fares, attributed to a number of factors, including more demand chasing less capacity.

Meanwhile, Jet Airways has rolled back the salary cut of its over 10,000 employees from January. The airline had done a partial rollback of the pay cuts in July last year.

The airline sector saw a choppy year in 2010 but the last few months of the saw demand for air travel improve significantly, said Jet Airways Chief Commercial Officer, Sudheer Raghavan. Come 2011, he added that the domestic travel industry would grow by around 17-18% in January itself.

We have brought back 64 flights into full service segment, Raghavan said.

Raghavan further said that the airline’s yields were up 13% in November and that he expects a capacity growth at 14%.

Much ado has been made of the high airfares by airlines with the Aviation Ministry intervening, but Raghavan believes most of these accusations of higher pricing were unwarranted.

New Delhi, Dec. 2: Airlines have proposed new fare bands that would raise the price of a Calcutta-Delhi ticket to Rs 40,000 unless bought at least two days in advance, but the government has allayed fears of any “exorbitant” hike.

“We will look into the interest of the aam admi and there will be no exorbitant fares,” civil aviation minister Praful Patel said.

The airlines’ proposal, made to sector regulator Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), relates to peak fares — which apply only if tickets are bought on the day of travel or the day before.

“The DGCA is looking into the matter. If a proposal has come, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be approved,” Patel said. He added that the DGCA had issued notices to the airlines over the exorbitant upper-band fares they had proposed.

Under the airlines’ proposal, the peak fare ranges between Rs 10,500 and Rs 40,000 over four distance bands: up to 750km; 750-1,000km; 1,000-1,400km and above 1,400 km.

The peak-fare band proposed for the 750-1,000km slab ranges between Rs 14,550 and Rs 19,500; while it is Rs 17,000 to Rs 25,000 for the next slab.

DGCA officials said the proposed fares were likely to be dismissed out of hand and airlines asked to “come to their senses”.

If the airlines persisted in trying to raise fares, civil aviation officials said, “relevant authorities could well initiate probes and action against what we may view as cartel-like action”.

The officials warned that licences could be given to new airlines to operate on Metro routes to break any “cartel-like situation”. Allowing new players in telecom has led to lowering of tariffs.

Analysts said the proposed rates were too high and would make business unviable for most airlines, especially the low-cost ones.

“On major routes, high peak fares would result in traffic moving to the railways,” said Robin Pathak, former Indian Airlines director and aviation sector analyst.

Airlines pointed out that the proposed price bands were only for peak fares. “The average price is much lower if the tickets are bought in advance,” an airline official said.

For instance, if you now book a ticket for December 23 on a New Delhi-Calcutta flight, the price can be as low as Rs 4,030 on a low-cost airline. A ticket for tomorrow’s flight could, however, cost around Rs 17,000.

The country’s domestic airlines — including IndiGo Airlines, SpiceJet, Jet Airways, JetLite, GoAir and Air India — have submitted the peak price bands in response to a DGCA directive last month to provide fare information on the first of each month.

The DGCA had issued its circular after fares on some routes, like Delhi-Mumbai, shot up by 300 per cent in November because of a demand-supply mismatch. The circular asked each airline to “furnish a copy of the route-wise tariff across its network in various fare categories... on the first day of every calendar month”.

Pradeep Baijal, head of the Federation of Indian Airlines, said: “FIA does not discuss fares.... Fares are decided by individual airlines.”

Jet Airways refused comment on the proposed fare hikes while other airlines sought time to react.

Aviation sector analyst Sudipto Sen said: “Airlines have been ratcheting up fares in response to increasing demands.... However, we estimate that once Air India, Indigo, SpiceJet and Jet manage to get deliveries of ordered planes, there could be over-capacity on many routes, sharply bringing down the fares.”

Private sector carrier Jet Airways today announced special fares for personnel of the Indian Armed Forces and paramilitary forces with immediate effect.

As part of this scheme, all serving as well as retired defence and paramilitary personnel, and their families, may now avail of a 50 per cent discount on base fares.

A press release from Jet Airways said this would be with immediate effect, for travel on the airline's domestic network, including Jet Airways Konnect, as also on the airline's code share flights with JetLite.

Jet Airways said to be unidentified ATR 72-500 customer

Jet Airways has emerged as the unidentified customer for an ATR 72-500 order that was confirmed in the first half of this year.

The European turboprop maker unveiled 42 firm orders over the period, including for 12 ATR 72-500s and 30 ATR 72-600s, plus 30 ATR 72 options.

ATR has already identified customers for 36 aircraft: Golden Air, Lao Airlines, Syrian Arab Airlines, Azul and Air Lease, but has not disclosed the client for the other six. Flight International sister publication Commercial Aviation Online reveals Jet as the unidentified customer.

The Indian carrier added four new aircraft (MSNs 919, 920, 924 and 928) in November to bring its ATR 72-500 fleet to 18, with another three aircraft on backlog.

Investec International Lease arranged the financing of the first two aircraft in November, with debt provided by Crédit Agricole Corporate & Investment Banking through an export credit agency (ECA) structure supported by Coface and Sace.

The two aircraft are part of batch of six ATR 72-500s to be delivered before the end of the year. The French bank is also acting as the ECA debt arranger and agent for the remaining four aircraft.

Since the Farnborough air show, ATR has announced an order for nine ATR 72-600s from Caribbean Airlines.

ATR says the deliveries are scheduled until the end of the year.

The FINANCIAL -- Detailed planning, co-ordination with multiple stakeholders and carefully supervised execution by Jet Airways, the country’s premier international airline (including its Konnect service), and its subsidiary JetLite, has resulted in a smooth, uneventful and successful transition of the group’s domestic operations to and from Delhi to the state-of-the-art Terminal 3 at the Indira Gandhi International Airport .

Since November 14, 2010, the Jet Airways Group has operated a total of over 160 flights to and from Terminal 3. FIIs raise stake in Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) increased their stake in Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines during the second quarter of this financial year, compared to the previous quarter.

FIIsâ€™ stake in Naresh Goyal-owned Jet Airways stood at 7.10 per cent during the three months through September, compared to 6.38 per cent during the first quarter of this financial year. Similarly, FIIs had 5.54 per cent stake in Vijay Mallya-owned Kingfisher Airlines, compared to 5.12 per cent in April-June.

However, in Gurgaon-based low-cost carrier SpiceJet, FIIs reduced their stake to 14.48 per cent from 15.46 per cent in the first quarter of this financial year.

Analysts said SpiceJet must have seen an increase in FII stake, but there was a decline in percentage terms, as the airline was converting foreign currency convertible bonds into equity. The conversion has increased its equity base, thus decreasing the percentage.

If the equity base of the airline was not increased, the FII share in the airline would have increased to 17.8 per cent.

FIIs, which have invested about $21.6 billion in Indian stocks till October, are expected to invest $35 billion by the end of 2010-11. The highest FII inflow in both dollar and rupee terms was last year, when they invested $17.64 billion.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also increased their stake in full-service carriers Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines. DIIs increased their stake in Jet from 9.22 per cent to 9.72 per cent and in Kingfisher, from 5.11 per cent to 6.83 per cent.

SpiceJet, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines are the countryâ€™s three listed airlines. According to reports, low-cost carrier IndiGo Airlines is planning to list itself.

DELHI: Effective November 14, 2010, Jet Airways, the country’s premier international airline (including its Konnect service), and its subsidiary JetLite, will migrate the group’s domestic operations to and from Delhi to the state-of-the-art Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport. On November 14, 2010, Jet Airways flight 9W 2637 (Delhi-Lucknow) with a scheduled departure time of 0520 hrs, and JetLite flight S2 791 (Delhi-Indore) with a scheduled departure time of 0535 hrs will be the first flights out of Delhi respectively.

To ensure a smooth transfer and minimise the likelihood of any guest inconvenience, Jet Airways, Jet Airways Konnect and JetLite guests are requested to report at the airport a minimum of 2 hrs before the scheduled departure times of their respective flights.

Guests may enter the Departure terminal from Gate Nos. 2 and 3 of the Terminal 3 (IGI), and proceed towards the B, C and D check-in islands for departure formalities. Jet Airways sees international load factors rising in Q3

India's largest private sector carrier Jet Airways Ltd expects a boom in international travel during the year-end peak season and sees load factors to rise further, as it adds more international routes.

"What you will see in quarter three is some kind of an uptick in seat factors, maybe going up to 83-84 per cent," KG Vishwanath, vice-president, Commercial Strategy and Investor Relations, said in a conference call.He said the company has been able to tackle seasonality factor "to a large extent" using wider network connectivity.

Jet Airways has achieved seat factors of around 80 per cent on international routes during the second quarter. The international business accounts for roughly 60 per cent of Jet's total revenues.

The airliner, which has a fleet of 90 aircraft, will also add some flights to its international operations during the year.

It already has announced plans to operate daily direct services between Milan, Italy and New Delhi from October 5, pending government approval.

Vishwanath dubbed the season between December 1 and January 15 as "peak of peaks" for the company's international operations.

The airline which reported a net profit of Rs 12.4 for the quarter ended September 30, compared with a net loss of about Rs 407 crore a year ago, expects revenues to rise faster than yields.

The firm's cash position as of September 30 was at Rs 760 crore, while debt stood at Rs 13,700 crore.

It also has plans to sell and lease back twenty 737 aircraft, officials said.

The Indian aviation sector is bouncing back with domestic passenger traffic growing 18.5 per cent in Jan-Sept.

The Jet group, which includes low-cost carrier JetLite, has a market share of 26.9 per cent in the country's aviation sector.

Jet, which has partnered with developer Godrej Properties to develop a office complex on land belonging to Jet in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex, expects an upfront payment of between Rs 500-550 crore from the pact, officials said.

Private sector carrier Jet Airways and Jet Airways Konnect, its all-economy service, has introduced 46 new flights across India as part of its winter schedule that became effective yesterday.

In addition to the launch of new flights on existing sectors, the airline has introduced services on nine additional sectors across India, with immediate effect. Jet Airways Konnect will inaugurate a daily service on the tenth sector, Aurangabad - Pune, effective March 1, 2011.

The airline will introduce direct services between Vishakhapatnam and three important Indian metros- Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderbad. It will also connect Delhi with Bhopal and Ahmedabad, and Aurangabad with Pune.

"With domestic air traffic, particularly business travel, on an upswing, there has been a strong up-shift in demand towards twin-cabin services on several routes. The introduction of Jet Airways’ Premiere and Konnect Select products on these new routes, in addition to the introduction of new services on existing domestic routes, is in response to this, and we are confident that they will prove extremely popular with guests," Mr Nikos Kardassis, CEO,Jet Airways, said.

Meanwhile, JetLite, the airline's all-economy subsidiary, has introduced 30 new domestic flights, including the launch of its services on eight additional sectors, in the winter schedule.

The airline will connect Mumbai and Hyderabad with Raipur. Nagpur with Bangalore, Delhi and Indore, respectively. JetLite will also connect Delhi with Pune and Chandigarh, and launch a daily service between Bangalore and Chandigarh.

Jet Airways posts Rs 12-cr profit on rising traffic

Jet Airways, India’s largest private sector carrier , on Friday beat market expectations to post a net profit compared to a loss in the year-ago period as rising domestic and international passenger traffic bolstered performance.

The company posted a net profit of Rs 12.4 crore during the June-September period against Rs 406 crore in the same period of the previous year. Analysts were expecting Jet to post a net loss as the period is considered to be a lean season for airlines in India. Naresh Goyal-controlled airline has been consistently making profits for the past four successive quarters.

Jet’s domestic traffic rose by 21.4%, while international traffic moved up by 28.3%. Jet also witnessed higher seat factor for the period, the company said in a statement. “We are bullish on the sector for the next one year as the oil prices are likely to remain the same,” said Rashesh Shah, aviation analyst at ICICI securities. Aviation turbine fuel prices currently hovers at Rs 42,000 per kilolitre.

Revenues for the company rose 33% to Rs 3,105 crore against Rs 2,325 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. The Jet group, comprising Jet Airways and low-cost carriers such as JetLite and Jet Konnect, posted a net loss of Rs 50 crore against Rs 532 crore for the June-September period.

The company, however, has retained its market leadership position with 27% of the domestic aviation sector according to the latest Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) figures.

India’s aviation sector is currently on an upturn as more people took to the skies during the quarter. The passenger traffic grew by 18.5% in January-September period.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had, only last month, said that the combined losses of the Indian carriers have come down to $400 million this year from $1.7 billion in 2009. Shares of the Naresh Goyal-led company closed at Rs 810.45.

Mumbai: Three years after acquiring Subroto Roy’s Air Sahara and renaming it JetLite, Naresh Goyal’s Jet Airways (India) Ltd is proposing to bring it under the Jet Airways Konnect brand name as part of the carrier’s strategy to strengthen its identity.

Konnect is the no-frills, all-economy service of Jet Airways, with which it shares planes and personnel.

JetLite, which currently operates as a low-fare carrier, will fly as Jet Airways Konnect under the plan.

Jet Airways, the country’s largest airline by passengers carried, last week applied to the regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to permit the carrier to enter into a franchisee agreement with JetLite to use the Jet Airways Konnect brand on the low-fare unit’s planes, according to two government officials who didn’t want to be named.

According to one of the officials, the move is aimed at reducing the number of brands operated by Jet Airways and avoiding confusion among passengers.

JetLite will remain as a legal entity, a shell company that will continue to own the planes that will be operated under the Jet Airways Konnect name.

“Though the air operating licence will be with JetLite, the planes will be rebranded as Jet Airways Konnect. The livery of the JetLite aircraft and uniform of the cabin crew would be the same as that of Jet Airways. However, a decision on the approval is yet to be finalized,” he added.

Jet Airways will continue to offer full services—first, business and economy classes—while Jet Airways Konnect (including JetLite operations) will provide all-economy, low-fare services.

This move, if approved by the regulator, will also help Jet Airways avoid overlapping flights on some routes.

“Jet Airways Konnect was formed in a hurry” in May 2009, said a consultant to domestic airlines, on condition of anonymity. It had been set up to respond to a slowdown in passenger traffic in the wake of the economic slump of 2008.

The proposed changes will allow the company to transfer flights from JetLite to Jet Airways, which can’t be done now because of regulatory issues, said the consultant, who isn’t advising Jet. This will allow Jet more flexibility over flight plans, he added.

“Jet Airways Konnect is a better brand compared to JetLite. And most important is that the confusion of three brands would be over,” he added.

Director general of civil aviation Nasim Zaidi could not be contacted despite repeated calls and text messages. A spokesperson for Jet Airways said she wasn’t aware of any such development.

India’s aviation industry continued its robust recovery with domestic passenger traffic growth of 20% in the April-August period from the year earlier, according to a September report by ICICI Securities Ltd. This was driven by strong macroeconomic growth and stable crude oil prices.

Ever since the deal to buy Sahara Airlines—which operated Air Sahara—was reached in April 2007, the two sides have been wrangling over the acquisition price. The initial price for Air Sahara was Rs 2,000 crore, but the two companies renegotiated the deal and eventually settled at Rs 1,450 crore.

Sahara India filed an application with the Bombay high court on 26 March 2009, claiming Jet Airways had defaulted on payments towards the purchase of Air Sahara and sought the court’s permission to seize Jet’s assets.

Akil Hirani, managing partner at Majmudar and Co., a leading law firm, said he does not see any legal hurdles to the proposed Jet Airways move.

“If DGCA does not have any restrictions in this matter, then this can work. As regards impact on the dispute with Sahara, it will depend on the contractual agreement between the parties,” he said.

The industry isn’t new to name changes since it has already undergone a wave of consolidation.

“From a financial impact perspective, there is only the cost involved in communicating the brand, changing the livery, and carrying out back-office IT (information technology) related and ticketing changes,” said Mahantesh Sabarad, senior vice-president (equity research) at Fortune Equity Brokers (India) Ltd.

“Such changes have happened in the past, like Air Sahara to JetLite, Air Deccan to Kingfisher Red, ModiLuft to SpiceJet, etc. From the marketing perspective, half the work seems to be done as people have accepted the Konnect brand already,” he added.

Jet Airways shares fell 2.83% on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday to Rs800.50 apiece. The exchange’s benchmark Sensex index lost 0.32% to 19,941.04 points.

Brand consolidation isn’t always necessary to take advantage of expanding business opportunities, according to Ramesh Jude Thomas, president and chief knowledge officer at Equitor Management Consulting Pvt. Jet Airways Konnect to fly daily to Dehradun from Delhi, effective March 28, 2010

In keeping with its move to connect major Indian metros with smaller cities across the country, Jet Airways Konnect, Jet Airways’ all-economy, no-frills service, will introduce daily, direct services to Dehradun from New Delhi, effective March 28, 2010.

The new Konnect service, which marks the addition of Dehradun to Jet Airways’ extensive pan-India network, will operate aboard a state-of-the-art ATR 72-500 aircraft.

Flight 9W 2635 will depart New Delhi at 1015 hrs, arriving in Dehradun at 1115 hrs. Flight 9W 2636 will then depart Dehradun at 1145 hrs, arriving back in New Delhi at 1245 hrs.

According to Mr. Nikos Kardassis, CEO, Jet Airways, “We are delighted to add Dehradun to our network with the introduction of the new daily flights to the city from New Delhi. Jet Airways, India’s premier international airline, will enhance its domestic network, with the introduction of new services, as well as the enhancement of services on existing Konnect services on certain domestic routes.

Effective March 28, 2010, Jet Airways’ Konnect service will introduce daily flights on the Kochi - Bengaluru - Ahmedabad sectors, aboard its state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

From Monday to Saturday, flight 9W 2306 will daily depart Kochi at 0745 hrs, arriving in Bengaluru at 0845 hrs. Flight 9W 2306 will then depart Bengaluru at 0930 hrs, arriving in Ahmedabad at 1130 hrs.

On Sundays only, flight 9W 2306 will daily depart Kochi at 0745 hrs, arriving in Bengaluru at 0845 hrs. Flight 9W 2306 will then depart Bengaluru at 1000 hrs, arriving in Ahmedabad at 1200 hrs.

Flight 9W 2307 will daily depart Ahmedabad at 1500 hrs, arriving in Bengaluru at 1700 hrs. Flight 9W 2307 will then depart Bengaluru at 1740 hrs, arriving in Kochi at 1840 hrs.

Jet Airways Konnect will also introduce services on the Hyderabad-Chennai-Port Blair sectors, where it will operate five flights weekly (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday), aboard its Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Flight 9W 2361 will depart Hyderabad at 0820 hrs, arriving in Chennai at 0925 hrs. Flight 9W 2362 will then depart Chennai at 1000 hrs, arriving in Port Blair at 1205 hrs.

Flight 9W 2363 will depart Port Blair at 1240 hrs, arriving in Chennai at 1440 hrs. Flight 9W 2364 will then depart Chennai at 1600 hrs, arriving in Hyderabad at 1710 hrs.

Effective March 28, 2010 Jet Airways’ Konnect service will also introduce a daily service between Mumbai and Nagpur, enhancing the frequency of services from the current four flights/week on the sector, as well as introduce its third service on the Mumbai-Indore sector.

Flight 9W 2020 will depart Mumbai at 1515 hrs, arriving in Nagpur at 1630 hrs. Flight 9W 2021 will depart Nagpur at 1705 hrs, arriving in Mumbai at 1820 hrs.

Flight 9W 2402 will depart Mumbai at 1230 hrs, arriving in Indore at 1350 hrs from Monday to Friday, and on Sundays. On Saturdays only, flight 9W 2402 will depart Mumbai at 1155 hrs, arriving in Indore at 1315 hrs.

Flight 9W 2018 will daily depart Indore at 1425 hrs, arriving in Mumbai at 1540 hrs.
